Backstabbing

“Backstabbing” is when someone takes personal or private information about another person and uses it against them. This could mean:

• Sharing private information that a friend shared with you in confidence
• Talking meanly about a friend behind his/her back
• Getting information from a friend only to share it with others.
• Pretending to be in a private conversation with a friend while online or while texting, when really other people are around reading the conversation.

Those that do this are not true friends. True friends do not use information that is private and make it public for the whole world to gossip about. There are many reasons why someone might do this: peer pressure, insecurity, showing off to their friends/peers, trying to impress new friends, or the need to have drama in their life.

Being backstabbed by a friend can be devastating. When this happens, you can be left feeling hurt and as though the trust between you and your friend has been broken. You may feel like everyone is judging you and that no one wants to be friends with you anymore. Know that this will pass, and your true friends will stand by you. Never resort to backstabbing someone in retaliation – this will only come back to bite you! The hype will eventually die down as something new grabs people’s attention. Remember that what goes around comes around and people eventually start to see those who backstab for who they really are.
